Receptionists Day:
21st Anniversary

Here is some of the news coverage we have generated to gain focus on the important role of a receptionist in business.

Holiday Insights Website:Receptionist Day When : Second Wednesday of May Don't confuse this day for Administrative Professionals Day or Secretary's Day.  Receptionists, this is your day! Okay, maybe it's not a day off. But, it's a day to recognize and appreciate all the things that you do! The purpose of Receptionists Day are two-fold. First, of all it gives recognition to receptionists. After all, they are the first person your customers see when they walk through the door of your company. The great first impression is molded in large part thanks to your smiling, cheerful receptionist. The second reason for Receptionist Day is to promote pride and professionalism in the position.   On this day, treat your Receptionist with flowers, candy, or a lunch! Note: There is also a "Receptionist Week. It is celebrated the Second week of May.

Origin of Receptionist Day Our extensive research on this day came up with little substantial information around the history or origin of this day. We only discovered one site with any real content about the day. This was at the National Receptionist Association. We did find this day listed on countless Ecard websites.

(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - They may not sign your paychecks or do the media interviews, but there's no question a good receptionist is critical for the success of a business.
Think about: They are usually the first point of contact – in person and by phone. That means they set the tone of the business activity that follows. They respond to inquiries; they represent the company on numerous fronts.
May 12 is National Receptionists Day in recognition of more than 900,000 receptionists nationwide. The day, launched in 1990, provides both a reminder of the value of receptionists and an opportunity to thank them for the jobs they do.
" Receptionists are worth their weight in gold," says Jennifer Alexander, executive director of National Receptionists Day . "Try sitting in at their job for a couple of hours and you will have a whole new appreciation for their job."
How can you honor the receptionist where you work? For starters, the National Receptionists Association offers coffee mugs and pens to show appreciation all year .
You can also download a proclamation form and screen savers from the organization's website – www.nationalreceptionists.com . Taking a receptionist to lunch is always a good idea, too.
National Receptionists' Day occurs during National Employee Week in May. The day is recognized not only in the United States but in Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia as well.
Alexander says that increasingly companies are giving receptionists more responsibility and increased exposure in their jobs . They're also given titles, including front desk manager or director of first impressions.
"I don't need to tell you that many people do not understand this profession and consider it an entry level position or a stepping stone to some other position in a company," Alexander writes in the National Receptionists Association's May newsletter. "But that ‘grass is greener' mentality has moved many a receptionist on to a position that was nowhere near as much fun or high profile within a company, or with the public."

Chase's Calendar of Events: National Receptionists Day

Receptionists are the 'front line' personnel in the business setting. They are the first person a client has contact with and they set the tone of the business transaction to follow. Their interpersonal skills, telephone etiquette and communication skills are very important elements in greeting clients, responding to their inquiries and representing the company overall. They are the company’s director of first impressions.

National Receptionists Day was initiated in 1991 by Jennifer Alexander, the director of National Receptionists Association. The mission of National Receptionists Day is to gain awareness and appreciation for the role of receptionists in the business setting, and to provide community and support for receptionists nationwide.

Companies observe National Receptionists Day in the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. A popular celebratory effort is to write up a proclamation from the company which officially recognizes National Receptionists Day and their receptionist. Proclamation forms are available for download from the association website. There are also National Receptionists Day mugs and pens available for sale.
